I think that if inventions destroyed invention, it was not a result of the inventions themselves, but of the growing idea that only experts, professionals, or corporations are capable of inventing. Whether people feel this is because of capital, knowledge/education, or whatever, it leaves those who ascribe to it feeling powerless. So we sit back and wait for others to invent new products, solve our problems, etc.
On the other hand, I don't see how a car could be invented before the wheel, and in that sense invention begets invention.

Yes, technology does beget technology, but is that inventiveness?
